Intellectual musicians and more on PCM #9

The last few days, we had a few comments on our mass ride. I don't really like to comment even more when it's coming from the few "intellectual" musicians.

We love music btw. We go karaoke after our cycling ride. :P

So, whatever la.

Daoh,

Pepatah melayu ada mengatakan 'Seolah anjing menyalak bukit'.

Everybody have something they believe in, so what if some so called 'musicians' of higher(?) intellectuals would be so stuck up on the correctness of using the word 'critical mass'.

Who are these so called 'musicians'?
From the Ministry of Correct Abbreviation Usage perhaps?

We do not owe them anything, so let them be. Let them share the 'higher intellectual' that is bestowed to them with the rest of the world.

Until the so called 'musician' come and cycle/ride/walk/swim in our shoes, they can say all they want and they can have their own CM Critical Mass which is true to the interpretation (as they deem it to be).

Maybe we could join their CM then :)

P/S Not much intelligence, too much memandai-mandai

Hi there,

This is a great mass ride... but since its not really following the real cause, is it possible to have it on a weekend?... like a sat or sun morning... am sure alot more people, esp the young could join in for this fun mass ride...

cheers!

I think what they are trying to know is why we used the term 'Critical Mass'. They argued on the basis of the term that we use .... maybe we should create a new term that people can't criticize.

The so called 'musician' got the point since we do follow the 'World Date' for critical mass but we do not follow the idea of critical mass.

Well i don't want indulge further about the definition. I join and support this ride coz this is the time that i can meet my friends and make new friends as well. Try to organise a get together...So nowadays i just tell my cycling kakis..See u at PCM:-)

Since PCM is a casual ride, I find that it's suitable for all levels...When we can get more and more people into cycling, it could lead into all good things...eg road safety, environment, better health..etc.

PAUC idea is great to do it on weekends but my experience in organising it in Shah Alam has not been very successful. The low turn out mainly due to the roadies prefer long distance tarmac ride and for the mtbs, they prefer off road. Any good suggestions? So friday nite is the best. It would not be practical for long ride or off road at nite. The distance of about 20km would be ideal since it would take about 1hour ++. Just nice for an exercise:-)

Some people say that Critical Mass should be in busy city..yes i do agree. But try to do that in KL...I always got response..."Huhh..very dangerous..U know la malaysian drivers..." and how many Malaysians cycle to work? In my opinion, get all those motorist into cycling..then subsequently cyclists will earn the respect as road users too...since they are also into cycling.

Focus on the Circle of Influence rather than Circle of Concern. We always concern about the things we can't do or change. Do something that we can do..Start bicycling and influence your neighbours and friends as well. (read Stephen Covey's book for further info). I rest my case:-)

Yeah bro Azizan...

Focus on the Circle of Influence... So no worries about changing to weekends then... Shah Alam was a failure cos there wasn't much support, not much awareness... but PCM has got the fanbase and the awareness... as for roadies and mtbs, convince them that this is 1 day of a weekend in a month... so am sure if they were supportive, they will turn up too... use the Circle of Influence...

The fri night thingy could be an hour ride, but if you look at how it develops collectively... the journey there, some start delays, and the mingling, you ended up having spent 4-5 hours and eventually home around 2-3am... I mean apart from trying to encourage cycling, you are encouraging a different kind of lifestyle... and at these wee hours, how would you encourage more young and new cyclist to participate... how are you to promote fun and healthy when most of the public are indoors, mostly asleep and can't see the mass in action... you get the same demographic each time... 90-95% males, maybe 18-40 yo... you want to encourage more babes, more newbies, your neighbours... the timing has to be right...

for now, becos of the time factor, you may have lost one new participant, maybe doesn't make a difference, but things always ripples... that one participant could have brought PAUC, and PAUC brings little ones, and little one's friends, maybe... and friends parents later on... so could you and others too... you get the drift... the Circle of Influence...

apart from the cause, CM is about the numbers... and expanding the numbers... right now I believe you may see new riders but the numbers doesn't change much... well it grew, for a while...

don't end up having the usual suspects from other races, other meets... cos eventually it'll just become a congregation of the existing bike frat... and crudely, it'll be just another poser rides and socialising...

and pls don't take this as a criticism, I have laid out my reasons, to my understanding, and why I feel the timing isn't right... but its all up to the main man... and the existing followers... if you're not truly following the cause, and can't start at 5-7pm, like most cm cities, perhaps you could also readapt and change the day to suit the current intentions... which is promoting cycling... fun, healthy... am sure, the numbers would increase significantly...

and when it does increase and if others ask again why use 'critical mass' cos not upholding the cause.... you could say cos we have the numbers... the numbers to move... and thats how, I believe, it originated...

well good luck... hope for a change in 2009...

cheers!

I am giving something constructive... something to ponder... its not a just-do-it situation...

I may not have done it, but my partner did... which brings about my post... please be matured and be constructive about it too... not ngenjot... or whatever that is...

Many said, you haven't tried, you won't know...
I can't sing, but I know when is a good time to sing, or I know a bad singer from a good one...
I can't ride well, but I can see a good cyclist from a bad one... I may not be a writer, but I can tell a good story from a bad one... my point is, don't give me the BS about I haven't done this so I don't know... give me something constructive... please...

azizan...
sorry bro, I'm no organiser... with your reply, I rest my case... but did I say something bad for you to put it on me? I am no organiser... what I wrote was a reason for a change... not sarcasm...

I won't give a damn if my partner hadn't gone for this... but I guess... thats the end of it!

all the best bro... happy riding to all... for 2009...

cheers

hi, your comments are well accepted by me. Understand how u feel. Honestly i do prefer daytime ride. That's why i cycle to office. So my mileage and exercise is done during d weekdays. Most people think it's dangerous but my personal experience 95% of d road users do respect n give way to me:-) U are most welcome to give comments at my blog. In fact we do have morning ride at tasik s.alam on weekends but it's a small crowd.

PAUC,
I dun really mind actually. :) I understand where you're coming from. Definitely, will take notes on your comments.

Me and my friends here actually trying to make people cycle first and to have fun in cycling. Not randomly act aggressively without blunt reasons and cause. Or else i don't think PCM won't survive this long.

But i am sad people do take it too hard in the term Critical Mass.

I did said earlier, me and my friends are promoting cycling at the very early of stage. Promoting cycling. Creating an awareness of cycling as a healthy and alternative lifestyle. We make sure everyone who comes to PCM have fun instead of all out anger against authorities.

It is sad for me and some of my friends every month trying to actually say to the newbies, "It's alrite you ride a cheap bike as long as you finish this ride and you keep on cycling" yet some out there still insist we're just out for the glamour.

Anyway PAUC, your comments are very much appreciated than those who just blatantly accusing us to misuse the term "Critical Mass". Thanks a lot. :D

Aku dah join PCM 4 kali, tak byk pun. Masa 1st ride pun dah suarakan kurang setuju dgn istilah PCM, cara ride dll. Tapi... itu pandangan peribadi & aku bukan 'maksum' utk 100% betul.

Bagi aku simple, bila ride aku tak cerita pasal apa itu PCM, tutup buku. Aku ride dgn member, borak, tanya khabar.

Kenapa perlu PCM ditukar nama? Sebab tak ikut definisi?. Definisi yang mana satu? dan definisi siapa?. Salah satu definisi CM adalah 'cycling celebration'. Fit what?.
