VOTE EARTH
YOUR LIGHT SWITCH IS YOUR VOTE

This year, Earth Hour has been transformed into the world’s first global election, between Earth and global warming.

For the first time in history, people of all ages, nationalities, race and background have the opportunity to use their light switch as their vote – Switching off your lights is a vote for Earth, or leaving them on is a vote for global warming. WWF are urging the world to VOTE EARTH and reach the target of 1 billion votes, which will be presented to world leaders at the Global Climate Change Conference in Copenhagen 2009.

This meeting will determine official government policies to take action against global warming, which will replace the Kyoto Protocol. It is the chance for the people of the world to make their voice heard.

Earth Hour began in Sydney in 2007, when 2.2 million homes and businesses switched off their lights for one hour. In 2008 the message had grown into a global sustainability movement, with 50 million people switching off their lights. Global landmarks such as the Golden Gate Bridge in San Francisco, Rome’s Colosseum, the Sydney Opera House and the Coca Cola billboard in Times Square all stood in darkness.

In 2009, Earth Hour is being taken to the next level, with the goal of 1 billion people switching off their lights as part of a global vote. Unlike any election in history, it is not about what country you’re from, but instead, what planet you’re from. VOTE EARTH is a global call to action for every individual, every business, and every community. A call to stand up and take control over the future of our planet. Over 74 countries and territories have pledged their support to VOTE EARTH during Earth Hour 2009, and this number is growing everyday.

We all have a vote, and every single vote counts. Together we can take control of the future of our planet, for future generations.

VOTE EARTH by simply switching off your lights for one hour, and join the world for Earth Hour.

Saturday, March 28, 8:30-9:30pm.

PCM supports Earth Hour's aim to reach more than one billion people in 1000 cities around the world in 2009. Earth Hour is inviting communities, business and governments to switch off lights for one hour at 8:30pm on Saturday March 28, sending a powerful global message that we care enough about climate change to take action.

i read this in the papers today. Whats your take?

Earth Hour is a mere publicity stunt

I READ with amazement and irony the efforts of WWF Malaysia to latch on to the Earth Hour event and all the celebrities, media and corporations that have come up in support.

It is amazing that people are so easily taken in by a mere publicity stunt that fails at the very essence. Turning off our lights for one hour on one designated day of the year to save our planet surely is a PR event at best.

It shames the thousands of devoted people, government bodies, scientists and environmentalists that have for years been working on finding real solutions to address this global concern. Malaysians should see past this gimmick by international NGOs and start changing their lifestyles. Surely we can be more proactive and not be fed by an agenda of international bodies.

Why don’t we implement power conservation programmes, ride public transport on certain days in a month, car pool, etc?

It is also ironic that the organiser, WWF Malaysia, up until very recently, did not even have a climate change programme to begin with when all others (even local groups and individuals) have been persistent in their pleas for Malaysians to take action.

Remember, our leaders signed the Kyoto Protocol and there has been concerted movement towards reaching solutions. Please let us all be enlightened and move away from celebrations and gimmicks.

in a way, it's really a publicity stunt. but at least it's something.

however the effectiveness can be questioned. 1 hour only per year?

how about the car that you drive everyday? That's lots of CO2 gas.

The author has a point. Change should be consistent and not just 1 mere hour.

it's a good initiative. but i doubt it does to change anything. unless something drastic is going to happen (e.g. this is a monthly event, or better weekly event), then the difference should be clear. guess i'll turn off my light, just for this special 2009 version.

In my opinion, Earth Hour is an initiative. A very simple initiative (yet i believe it to be effective, virally communicate) that finally involves everyone, anyone.

It's so simple, you only have to switch off your lights for an hour. Yet do you think it's that simple?

Take for example, you and the family gorging your eyes out in front of the TV watching some singing competition ala reality show or it's Manchester United vs Liverpool showcase. Then the electricity went off. Are you mad? Susahkan? Panas kan? Tipu la tak kecoh. Paling sikit pun "Alamak...".

Tak sengaja tapi tercakap. :P

So yes Earth Hour maybe, MAYBE, a publicity stunt. It's not just a stunt. It's a bloody PR.

But when it's a stunt, people take notice. When people take notice. People tend to want to know more. We want to be educated.

Take for instance the Livestrong Campaign. Now THAT is truly publicity stunt? Lance Armstrong Foundation did this gimmick of the yellow band in the cause of cancer.

Very simple. Put on an ad blog, tie up with Nike, you pay a buck for the band and there you go, you just donated to the foundation.

Now who the fucking joe would buy a damn yellow band?

I bet that joe would because it's only a dollar (RM3.50 lebih kurang).

Does he cares for the cancer campaign - maybe not? But he got involved.

By the end of the whole hoo-haa, Livestrong made USD 50mil. It got every other Americans and some in this part of the world "stunted". The foundation got it's money, Lance Armstrong made 7 titles in Tour De France and now, he's the American dream. And the cause got started.

Of course, there are two sides of every story. There will be people who think this is a major hoax by some international organisations.

Some being smart yet also some being smart asses.

Some can say we should be starting something in our homegrown. We do. We may or may not notice. I believe there are (were) good deeds, works, publicity stunt that are meaningful and to a good cause done here in Malaysia.

So yeah, in my opinion, it does take courage, a stunt (it can be stupid - watch Jackass, that is one damn stupid stunt - yet every rednecks and some of us relate to it), simplicity and involvement to educate.

Maybe it wouldn't such a big deal if Earth Hour started here isn't it?

Lepas ni aku ingat tiap2 hari aku nak tutup lampu kat rumah aku. Masa siang la... sebab semua orang pegi keje. :P

Ini opinion aku... (Sedang mau ke toilet dan berak sambil tutup lampu)

publicity stunts, preach, pleads.... etc
eventually it all boils down to creating awareness... you may choose to ignore and resent the approach, but somehow, deep inside each of us knows that this is a good cause...

and I very well agree with bro Daoh... this is more of an initiative... a kickstart for individuals like us to get involved... but it doesn't end after the hour... its up to us to continue living the hour over and over again... its your vote.
